History

FAMSAC was created in 1969 when a group of volunteers from local churches banded together to help families in need in the Bells Corners area during the Christmas season. The program expanded to provide emergency food assistance year-round in response to steadily growing demand. Today, FAMSAC provides assistance to about 200 local families every month. In December, our gift card program provides additional support for about 350 households.

For most of FAMSAC’s existence, pantry and storage facilities were provided by St. Martin de Porres Church, but after several years of moving between different locations, FAMSAC now has a permanent home at Hollyer House, an affordable housing complex with a community hub at 3865 Old Richmond Road.

FAMSAC, a registered charitable organization, is entirely volunteer run. Thanks to outstanding support from local churches, businesses, community groups and individuals and the dedication of several dozen volunteers, FAMSAC is able to provide assistance to the community we serve.

Updates & Recent Developments

Feed a Family this Holiday Season!

Our 2022 Christmas Campaign is now underway, and, with the rising cost of food, we expect demand will be very high. Last year, thanks to your generosity, we were able to support 264 families and hope to be able to provide assistance to up to 300 this year. Your donation will help us to help brighten the holiday season for those struggling with food insecurity. Please click here to make a contribution to our Christmas Campaign!

If you live in our catchment area and your family needs a little help this holiday season, please call 613-820-5428 before December 2 and leave a message on our answering machine to register for our Christmas Campaign. One of our volunteers will be in touch with you to confirm the arrangements.

FAMSAC Food Cupboard is pleased to partner with the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, Christ Church Bells Corners and the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre in the Housing Project for Bells Corners, an exciting project that will bring both affordable housing and a community hub to the heart of our community. Help us to build a welcoming and dynamic community hub in this new complex, where FAMSAC will have a permanent home — a purpose-built space – to continue providing emergency food support to families we have been serving for over 50 years. It will also allow us to work with the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre to better provide families in need with a broader array of services.

We would be very grateful if you would consider donating to our joint capital campaign to help us cover construction and fit-up costs associated with this new space. Donations can be made online at https://www.canadahelps.org/s/W6MKZ.

A message to our community in response to COVID-19

During these challenging times, we remain open for those who need assistance. Please note, however, that demand has been very high and, while we have increased the number of appointments available each week, these fill up quickly.

For the safety of our clients and volunteers, we will be temporarily changing how food is provided. Instead of shopping for items, all clients with appointments will receive pre-packed hampers at the door of the food cupboard. Volunteers will wear disposable gloves and will regularly sanitize the carts they use.

We appreciate your patience and understanding.

It’s Food Truck Rally Time Again!

West End Food Truck Rally, August 18, 11-7 at Christ Church Bells Corners

On Saturday, August 11, thirteen food trucks will prepare mouth-watering treats as part of FAMSAC Food Cupboard’s biggest food and fundraiser of the year. Hosted by Christ Church Bells Corners and sponsored by Myers Automotive Group, the fourth annual West End Food Truck Rally will take place in the church’s parking lot (3861 Old Richmond Road) from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.

The start of the new school year is just around the corner, so there is a pressing need for healthy snacks and drinks to fuel children’s minds and bodies. Donations of granola bars, real fruit juice boxes and snack-sized apple sauce would be greatly appreciated, as would healthy cereals and oatmeal to ensure that children get a healthy breakfast. Cash donations are also welcome, as they are used to purchase fresh food for our clients.

In an inspiring example of neighbours helping neighbours, Ad Mare, Angry Dragonz, Big D’s Doghouse, Caffeine FixThe Merry Dairy, Mr. ChurritosPizza All’Antica, Raon Kitchen, ROOST Food Truck, Smokin’ R&R’s BBQ, Stella Luna, Sula Wok, and Whitetail’s Wild Game Grill will donate a portion of their proceeds from the rally to FASMAC Food Cupboard. In addition, 100% of proceeds from sales at the drink tent will go to FAMSAC, thanks to returning drink sponsor Giant Tiger Bells Corners.

A bouncy castle and face painting (sponsored by Playground Planners), a show by Little Ray’s Reptiles (sponsored by Frontline Credit Union), balloon animals (sponsored by Arbique & Adhe) and all day music make this a perfect event for people of all ages.

Our thanks to the organizing committee at CCBC for once again hosting this wonderful event and to all of the generous sponsors and volunteers for their support!

FAMSAC’s New Home

We’ve moved! FAMSAC is still located in Town Hall Plaza at the corner of Old Richmond and Robertson, but can now be found in Unit 8, a few doors to the right of our old spot.

Many thanks to the many volunteers who have helped us with this transition over the past few weeks, with a special mention to Deborah Barlas who oversaw this project. Thanks as well to those who donated to help us cover the costs of the renovations to our new space.

Below are a few photos of our new digs!

FAMSAC on the Move

There are changes coming to Town Hall Plaza where FAMSAC is housed and these have resulted in us having to move from our current unit into a new space within the same mall. The move will occur in mid-October.

The catch is that, between now and then, we need to update the new space where there is presently not a bathroom or a sink, nor plumbing connections for either. We’ve discovered that the cost of installing a handicap accessible bathroom (because we have both volunteers and clients in wheelchairs) and a kitchen sink for cleaning donated produce, plus painting and other small renovations is going to be somewhere in the neighbourhood of $15,000-$17,000. We are working with the contractor to bring this price down as much as possible, and we already have a small group of volunteers available to help with painting. However, we have to move around Thanksgiving and everyone is busy with family obligations. Plus, our food bins start filling up with donations around now, so time is of the essence. That is why we need contractors to do the work.

In case you’re wondering, we have indeed sought out alternate locations, but this is the best option available to us in the time we have.

If you would like to help with the costs of setting up the space please donate today! If you are interested in helping out with the move or smaller renovations, please contact us!

Come Out to Our Biggest Fundraising Event of the Year

2017 West End Food Truck Rally

On Saturday, August 12, eleven food trucks will prepare savoury and sweet treats all day in support of the FAMSAC Food Cupboard. Hosted by Christ Church Bells Corners and sponsored by Myers Automotive Group, the third annual West End Food Truck Rally will take place in the church’s parking lot (3861 Old Richmond Road) from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.

With the new school year just around the corner, there is a pressing need for healthy snacks and drinks to fuel children’s minds and bodies. Recognizing this critical need, Ad Mare, Big D’s Doghouse, Bytown Bayou, Caribbean Cruiser, The Merry Dairy, Mr. Churritos, Ottawa Streat Gourmet, Pizza All’Antica, Raon Kitchen, Rico Peru, Sula Wok, and Whitetail’s Wild Game Grill have offered to donate a portion of their proceeds from the rally to FASMAC Food Cupboard.  In addition, 100% of proceeds from sales at the drink tent will go to FAMSAC, thanks to returning drink sponsor Giant Tiger Bells Corners.

The West End Food Truck Rally is the place to be on August 12. Join us for fabulous food, great music, and fun for the whole family, including a show by Little Ray’s Reptiles (sponsored by Frontline Credit Union), a bouncy castle (sponsored by Anna Cowie Real Estate), face painting (supplied by Team Chiarelli), and balloon animals (sponsored by Tierney Stauffer LLP). Thanks to Myers, admission is free to our event, but we encourage everyone to bring a food donation for FAMSAC. This year, we are ramping up supplies for school lunches so items such as applesauce snacks, granola bars, or (100% real) juice boxes for school lunches are most welcome; Breakfast cereal and oatmeal are also appreciated as they are in high demand as the school year starts. Cash donations will be used to supply families with fresh foods such as milk, eggs, fruit and veggies, and ground beef.

Our thanks to CCBC for once again hosting this wonderful event and to all of the generous sponsors and volunteers for their support!

Exciting Changes at FAMSAC

After a busy few months, we are proud to announce some exciting changes to how FAMSAC operates.

First, as of this week, it is now possible for clients to come to our food cupboard and choose items off the shelves, picking a certain number of items in each category.  This means being able to select foods that better suit their needs, like a cereal that their children will eat, a low-sodium option for a person with high blood pressure or more culturally appropriate items.  Besides empowering our clients, this will also help to break the social isolation that some of them feel.  Finally, it will also help to reduce waste by ensuring that the items distributed are desired.

Clients are still asked to make a request by leaving a message on our answering machine.  They will be contacted by one of our volunteers and given an appointment time when they can come to select their items.

This new way of operating also provides new volunteer opportunities, as we need people to greet our clients and help them select their items.  If you are available for a few hours on either Tuesday evenings, Thursday mornings or Saturday afternoons, please contact our volunteer coordinator.

In addition, thanks to several generous donations, we are now in a better position to offer more fresh foods to our clients.  Two community garden projects provided us with regular fresh food donations over the course of the summer: kale, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers and more.  The Bells Corners Business Improvement Area kindly agreed to fund the purchase of a commercial refrigerator so that we could store these items.  Moreover, we have received several monetary donations which have allowed us to regularly purchase fresh fruit to provide for the school lunches of our clients’ children.

All of this means more options and healthier choices for our clients.  We are very grateful to all those who have helped bring about these improvements to how we operate.

Support FAMSAC at our Biggest Fundraising Event of the Year

Local Food Trucks to Rally Again in Support of Emergency Food Cupboard

On Saturday, August 13, twelve food trucks will bring exciting international flavours to Bells Corners in support of FAMSAC. Hosted by Christ Church Bells Corners and sponsored by Myers Automotive Group, the second annual West End Food Truck Rally will take place in the church’s parking lot (3861 Old Richmond Road) from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

The FAMSAC Food Cupboard supports over 80 families each month, but saw a 30% increase in demand this past June. Growing demand for food assistance and significant operating costs have forced FAMSAC to rethink how we operate and serve our clients. But thanks to the incredible determination of our volunteers and support from the wider community, we are rising to this challenge. In the past three months alone, FAMSAC has established new relationships with local businesses and community garden volunteer groups, who are now growing vegetables for FAMSAC clients. The food cupboard has also purchased new freezers and, thanks to the generosity of the Bells Corners Business Improvement Authority, a commercial-grade refrigerator has been purchased for its new location. We are looking forward to offering fresh produce to our families for the first time ever, in addition to the non-perishable staples that neighbours continue to donate so generously. The rally, we hope, will provide us with the funds to sustain this healthy, new initiative.

This year’s rally features returning food trucks Ad Mare, Angry Dragonz, Big D’s Doghouse, The Merry Dairy, Mr. Churritos, Pizza All’Antica, Plátanos, and Sula Wok, as well as new participants Bytown Bayou, The Grilled Cheeserie, The Mobile Mayflower, and Rico Peru. An expanded Kids’ Zone will offer free games (thanks to the Scouts), activities, a bouncy castle (sponsored by BDO), and face painting by Team Chiarelli throughout the day.  All twelve food trucks will donate 12% of their proceeds to FAMSAC.  Erin Coffin, Food Truck Rally Coordinator notes, “Their generosity will ensure that FAMSAC can provide local families in need with a variety of healthy food choices in the months ahead.  We are so grateful for their support.”

Whether you are craving savoury or sweet delights, the West End Food Truck Rally is the place to be on August 13. Admission is free, though visitors are encouraged to bring a toonie (or more) to contribute to FAMSAC’s refrigerator/freezer fund.  Non-perishable items like cereal, oatmeal, granola bars, and kidney beans are also welcome.

Happy New Year from FAMSAC

2015 has been quite a year for FAMSAC. For 46 years, we have quietly worked out the basement of St. Martin de Porres Church, and then in March our whole world changed. A spring thaw and a cracked pipe led to a flood, the discovery of mold in the walls, and the temporary loss of our storage space.

However, there is always a silver lining – we asked the community for help to move to our temporary location – a recently vacated tattoo parlour – and everyone came out, making short work of the move. Food donations increased, and folks kindly made donations to help us pay rent for the first time since 1969.

There are so many great people in Bayshore, Bells Corners, Craig Henry, Crystal Beach, Manordale and Trend Village who want to help those in need within their community. We’ve had offer from new volunteers, some of whom are already assisting us and others for whom we are making plans to be able to put them to work in the new year.

Christ Church Bells Corners held the first West End Food Truck Rally – a great success with over $6,000 and over 6,000 food items donated. The Myers Group sponsored, and everyone had a fun and tasty day! WEFTR 2016 will be even better!

For the first time we asked for sponsors for our Christmas hampers. 175 individuals, families, organizations and businesses agreed to support a family in their neighborhood.

Local businesses offered to lend a hand as well. OK Tire took over picking up food donations from Bells Corners grocery stores, Urban Tandoor had a buffet dinner fundraiser in June, Grazie Pizza had a Thanksgiving lunch with proceeds and food donations going to FAMSAC, the Whiprsnapr Brewing Co. dedicated a beer to FAMSAC as a Christmas fundraiser, Giant Tiger collected over $2,500 at Thanksgiving, and FreshCo launched a food donation bin. Many local businesses also contributed to our Christmas silent auction which brought in over $3,000 (and there were some sweet gifts under people’s trees as a result!). The Insurance Bureau of Canada provided a big donation. OCTranspo let us be part of their Christmas “Fill the Bus” Campaign for the first time in 31 years – they say we can come back next year!

Local politicians came out to help and support us. Friends came out. Family came out. Past clients of FAMSAC who could now help, came out. And at the same time, our tireless volunteers, supporters, and local churches – who have always been there – came out.

2016 will still see a lot of change for FAMSAC, but we are up for it, and we are so fortunate that we have a strong, caring, and generous community who is there to help and participate.

Watch this space – it’s going to be a great ride!

With much appreciation,

FAMSAC Food Cupboard
