Why are Food Banks Important?
According to the Ontario Association of Food Banks, almost 360,000 Ontarians, including 120,000 children, turn to food banks each month.
The annual Hunger Report published by Food Banks Canada notes that most of those who access food banks have incomes that are too low to cover even the most basic needs. While many of those needing help are on social assistance or rely on disability-related income support, others are employed or rely on pensions or student loans. Because of a lack of affordable housing units, most pay market rates for rent and have little left over for food.
